"This is a clear, big investment that is testimonial of the health of tourism in Bohol," Durano said, referring to the 16-hectare Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa, which is building 70 luxurious villas catering to the rich Filipino tourists and visitors from Europe, the United States, Australia, Japan and Korea.

Captivating Guimaras

Nueva Valencia, Guimaras - An Italian couple on a two-month holiday in the Philippines chose to include this paradise in their itinerary and stayed at the Raymen Beach Resort in December 2006, unperturbed by news about the oil spill that brought the island province to world attention in August of the same year. "We are just here to see good beaches," said the Boldo couple, who are just among the hundreds of foreign guests who kept coming to Guimaras even in the aftermath of the infamous oil spill. Guimaras has 238.3-kilometer coastline, with long stretches of white, powdery sand considered among the finest in the world.

davao cityTravel and airline executives met in Davao City in February 2008 to develop and promote the sub-regional group of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) as one tourist destination. "We have to brand it as one destination," said Wee Hong Seng, president of the Sarawak Tourism Federation. BIMP-EAGA is a sub-regional group of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) formed in 1994 to help develop the economic well-being of the member countries through various tourism and trade exchanges and programs.

Black Eyed Peas promotes the Philippines

Apl.de.ap in the PhilippinesHe could make a beautiful song out of "Filipino", "Bebot" or "Take U to the Philippines".  Apl.de.ap, or Allan Pineda Lindo, a Filipino-American member of the hip hop group Black Eyed Peas certainly celebrates his Filipino heritage through his music.

Recently, apl.de.ap has collaborated with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and MTV Asia to promote the Philippines through his music.  "I wanted to represent where I came from," said apl.de.ap. "I wanted to showcase all the beautiful spots in the Philippines and invite all Filipino-Americans to come visit the Philippines."

Apl.de.ap, who was born in Sapang Bato, Angeles City in 1974 and moved to the United States at the age of 14 with the help of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, said this is his way of giving back to the country.

A son of a Filipino mother and an African American military serviceman stationed at Clark airbase who abandoned them after his birth, Pineda grew up in the US where he teamed up with other members of the Black Eyed Peas.

Oakwood Premier Joy NostalgServiced apartment provider Oakwood is back in the Philippines, with the formal opening on September 9, 2009 of its 223-unit Oakwood Premier Joy~Nostalg Center Manila in Ortigas Center built by the leisure and resort property unit of the family of biscuit magnate Jacinto Ng.

Undeterred by the global economic crisis, Oakwood Premier Joy~Nostalg Center Manila, occupying 28 floors of the P3-billion 41-storey Joy~Nostalg Center Manila, actually had a soft launching on August 1, but the formal opening of the hotel is on September 9, 2009.

"We are back in the Philippines," said Oakwood Premier Joy~Nostalg Center Manila general manager Brian Connelly. "Ortigas is the best location for corporate business.  It is located just across the Asian Development Bank and is near large shopping malls, business process outsourcing establishments and call centers."

Connelly said Oakwood Premier is looking at business travellers, tourists, and Filipinos as its market.  "We are drawing people from as far as Makati and Quezon City," he said.
