Boracay attracts more guests

The number of tourists in Boracay rose 12.15 percent year-on-year in the first five months of 2010.  Foreign visitors staying at hotels and resorts on the world-famous resort island grew faster at 26 percent, compared to the 6 percent increase among domestic tourists.
Taiwanese and Chinese tourists in Boracay continued to expand with the increase in charter flight operations between Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan and Shanghai to Kalibo.

Cebu tourism improves

Arrivals in Cebu went up by 4.34 percent year-on-year to 734,531 in the January-May period, providing impetus for greater public and private sector investments in infrastructure and tourism-related facilities.  Visitors in Cebu accounted for a 20 percent share of the total tourist volume in major destinations in the Philippines.  
Korea and Japan are the leading source markets for Cebu with a share of 30 percent and 21 percent, respectively, from the total number of foreign tourists staying in accommodation facilities in the province.

Foreign students in the Philippines

A 20 percent increase in the number of foreign students in the Philippines is projected in 2010.  Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said that as of 15th June 2010, a total of 6,416 foreign students have been issued student visas, compared to the 5,343 last year.  Hundreds more of foreign students’ visa applications are still being processed.
Of these foreign students, 1,871 were newcomers, while 4,545 were already studying here in previous semesters.

Alberto Lim as DOT Secretary New tourism secretary

Makati Business Club (MBC) executive director Alberto Lim has been appointed as the new secretary of the Department of Tourism (DOT), in place of Joseph Ace Durano.  Secretary Lim will have the chance to manage a more vibrant tourism industry and a stronger DOT organisation, following the enactment of the Tourism Act of 2009.
Before his appointment, Mr. Lim headed several boards involved in tourism. He co-founded the Freedom to Fly Coalition, which advocated an open-skies policy as a strategy to promote economic development.  He was also a member of the Civil Aeronautics Board. Mr. Lim also founded the Palawan Tourism Council, which is responsible for Palawan’s rise as a veritable tourist destination.

How many hotels does Philippines have?

Foreign and domestic tourists can stay at any of the 2,343 hotels and resorts in seven key destinations in the Philippines.  Altogether, these accommodation facilities provide 65,052 rooms as of June 2010.  About 46,048 persons are employed in these facilities, with 78 percent as regular personnel and 22 percent as seasonal employees.
