Taal off limits to tourists

PDF Print E-mail
Authorities have warned resort operators against bringing tourists to Pulo Island, near the crater of the restive Taal volcano in Batangas province.
The Philippine Coast Guard issued the warning after Alert level 2 was hoisted over Taal volcano, which means that it is experiencing magmatic intrusion that may lead to an eruption.
Despite earlier warnings from government volcanologists, foreign tourists were still coming to the island, often hiring horses to ride up to the volcano’s crater, local Coast Guard personnel said.  Mostly South Koreans and some Japanese were visiting the restive volcano, they added.

Cebu was cited as the “Best Honeymoon Destination” during the World Trade Fair 2010 in Shanghai, China, according to a report by BusinessMirror.  Tourism Secretary Ace Durano welcomed the award which was given by the Shanghai Tourism Municipal  Administration, VNU Exhibitions Asia and Shanghai International Conference Management Organisation.
“As the second most-visited destination in the country, next to Metro Manila, Cebu continues to draw more people to add to the 435,987 tourists that it posted in this year’s first quarter. We are not surprised that more and more travellers, especially couples, are finding its pristine white beaches, romantic resorts and breathtaking views, coupled with the innate warmth and friendliness of our locals, a perfect treat for their honeymoon trip,” Secretary Durano was quoted as saying.

Visitor arrivals in Boracay Island rose 16.2 percent year-on-year in the first four months of 2010, as the resort island in Aklan continued to attract attention from foreign visitors.  The Western Visayas office of the Department of Tourism (DoT) said tourist arrivals reached 291,443 as of April 2010, generating about PhP5.3 billion in tourism revenues.
Korean and Chinese nationals topped the list of foreign tourist arrivals in Boracay Island in the first four months of 2010, according to a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).  Data shows that there were 29,379 Korean nationals who visited the island resort in the four-month period.
