Tourism jobs fair has over 25,000 jobs, but there are few takers

More than 25,000 job vacancies in 288 companies awaited Filipino professionals, college graduates and skilled workers during a two-day tourism jobs fair organized by the Tourism Department.

However, only 7,568 applicants have pre-registered as of yesterday, according to JobsDB Philippines, which administered the processing of application for the event. The 4th Trabaho sa Turismo fair is held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City from May 22 to 23 at 9 am to 5 pm.

"We are happy that we in the industry can ably stand up to the challenge, sustaining the flow of both foreign and domestic tourists, attracting investments in big ticket tourism projects, and creating jobs and livelihood across the archipelago as all these happen," Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said, during the opening of the jobs fair yesterday.

Durano said more jobs will be generated in the future as new hotels, resorts and other tourism establishments are completed. He said about P20 billion worth of new facilities are under development.

"Tourist traffic in the top 15 destinations in the Philippines rose 10.3 percent in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period last year," he added.

Among the companies participating in the event are the Shangri La Group of Hotels, which look for receptionists and hotel staff; Ascott International which needs guest service officers, sales executives and duty manager; Enchanted Kingdom, which looks for account officers, events officers, ride attendants, and technicians; Philippine Airlines, which will train flight attendants; and medical service providers such as Marie France, which looks fo dermatologist, receptionists, nurses and therapists.

Budget carrier Cebu Pacific earlier announced that it is in need of 250 female flight attendants for its expansion program.

"You are actually more at risk going abroad, than working here," said JobsDB chairman Samuel Sung, who said there are more available jobs in the Philippines than elsewhere.

Sung said that of the 500,000 job alerts sent by JobsDB to applicants in the Asian region, about 200,000 jobs are for Filipinos.

Sung added that there are 5,700 available positions for Filipinos at the JobsDB system at any given day. "You don't have to go out to get jobs," he said.

During the jobs fair, 288 companies offered jobs, including 30 hotels resorts and spas such as Ascott, Baguio Country Club, Fuego Hotels and Properties Management Corp., Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park, Legend Hotel International Corp., Mandarin Oriental, Manila Pavillion Hotel, Marriot, Microtel Hotels and Resorts, Shangri La Hotels, Somerset Millennium Makati, Tagaytay country Hotel and even the Victoria Court Group.

Other employers represented were 36 business process outsourcing companies and call centers. There were also travel agencies, tour operators, restaurants, shipping/cruise firms, spas and wellness establishments, banks, healthcare and medical providers, government agencies, educational institutions, airlines, aviation company, automotive firms, construction firms, consultancy firms, information technology companies, insurance firms, telecom companies, trading companies, malls and department stores, among others.

The jobs fair in Pasay followed a highly successful staging of the same jobs fair in Cebu in March at the SM City Cebu, where a total of 8,598 jobs from 131 employers and exhibitors were offered to applicants.

Applicants, such as fresh graduates and the unemployed, still have the chance to apply for the positions by registering online at www.jobsdb.com.ph.

it´s a pity that Spanish is no longer spoken in Filipinas... this would have given the edge to work with Spanish markets like Spain and Latin American countires...

I think a Spanish teaching campaign is necessary in order to promote and increase the skills of Filipino tourism workers
