A hotel company backed by Genting Hong Kong Ltd. will open two new hotels in Metro Manila within the year, including a 172-suite Maxims Hotel for the upscale market and Remington Hotel for the middle class market. Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., a joint venture between Genting and local firm Alliance Global, Inc. said the six-star luxury hotel Maxims will start operations in June or July while budget hotel Remington will follow by the end of the year.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has ranked the Philippines as 87th among 124 countries in the first ever Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index. Out of the possible perfect score of 7.0, it received 3.8.

Global air passenger traffic rose 11.7 percent year-on-year in May 2010, according to the Geneva-based International Air Transport Association (IATA).  "Demand rebounded strongly in May following the impact of the European volcanic ash fiasco in April. Passenger traffic is now 1 percent above pre-recession levels, while the freight market is 6 percent bigger," Mr. Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and CEO said.

A survey conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in 2009 found that 22.8 million Filipinos with ages 15 years old and above traveled for any purpose within the country during the period 1st April to 30th September 2009.  The 2009 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors (HSDV) also shows that on the average, each traveler made two trips and visited two places in the country during the reference period.

New Holiday Inn opens in Makati

Holiday Inn & Suites Makati (HISM) targets business executives as its clients, according to a report by Philippine Star.

“International business travellers make up the bulk of Holiday Inn & Suites Makati’s pre-opening sales,” said Ms. Maricor Aquino, director of sales and marketing of Holiday Inn & Suites Makati. She said 90 percent of the reservations were done via the hotel’s online portal.

Passenger volume using the Clark International Airport in Pampanga rose 38 percent year-on-year to 160,847 in the first two months of 2012.  Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) president Victor Jose I. Luciano said this clearly shows Clark is becoming the airport of choice for international passengers.

Passenger traffic at Clark is expected to rise further with the operation of three more budget airlines.  AirAsia Philippines, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Air Asia Berhad, will launch domestic flights to Davao and Kalibo from its hub at the Clark airport on 28th March. 

Airphil Express will also launch maiden flights to Cebu, Puerto Princesa, Davao and Kalibo also from Clark on 29th March.  South East Asian Airlines (Seair) is set to fly to Kalibo as well as to international destinations such as Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and Bangkok in May.

Mr. Luciano said the operation of more flights this year would enable the facility to serve close to a million passengers, up from 730,000 passengers in 2011.
