Shangri-La Boracay Opens

The opening of Shangri-La's Boracay Resort and Spa has uplifted the tourism experience in Boracay Island, with its 217 rooms, high-end facilities and amenities, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT). The total cost of the new resort amounted to PhP4 billion.

New hotels in the Philippines

More hotels are expected to open in the Philippines in 2009 that would add over 3,000 rooms in the accommodation sector.  In the first quarter of the year alone, a total of 1,231 additional rooms were opened. With an aggregate cost of P8.016 billion, these new investments directly employed 1,286 people.

The opening of the P3.18-billion Imperial Palace Water Park, Resort and Spa in Cebu increased the room supply in the province by 4 percent to 14,792.
With 616 rooms, Imperial Palace Water Park, Resort and Spa provided employment to 780 workers.

Sky Pasada suspends operations

The management of the Sky Pasada has temporarily suspended its operations in all flight routes while it corrects safety issues of its aircrafts upon orders of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for much safer air travel, according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

No minors in Philippine hotels

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima has set a meeting with owners and operators of hotels and resorts in the country to inform them about a new policy disallowing Filipino minors from entering and staying inside the rooms of foreign guests not related to them.  The policy is the recommendation laid down by the Interagency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT).
 
“Especially the resorts, and those small hotels and inns because, in many cases, pedophiles use small hotels to cover their acts due to less strict rules,” said Secretary de Lima.
 

Tourism contribution

A comprehensive study by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) found that for the years 2000 to 2010, the tourism sector contributed about 5.8 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP) annually.  Its total contribution in 2010 reached PhP518.5 billion, or 13.0 percent higher than previous year’s PhP459 billion, according to the Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts (PTSA) compiled by the NSCB in coordination with the Department of Tourism.

Among the tourism industries, shopping had the largest contribution at 20.3 percent, followed by accommodation with 14.8 percent, and entertainment and recreation with 6.8 percent.  Other industries and their corresponding shares include travel agencies (5.6 percent), food and beverage (5.3 percent), transport (3.5 percent), and miscellaneous (0.9 percent).
