Laguindingan International Airport

A modern airport is expected to be opened in Mindanao by January 2012.  The Department of Transportation Communication (DOTC) said the Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental province near Cagayan de Oro City will serve as a gateway to the region. “We are fast-tracking the completion of the Laguindingan Airport which will serve as the new gateway to Mindanao,” DOTC Secretary Jose de Jesus was quoted as saying.
The airport project, built at a cost of PhP7.85-billion, is in its final stages of construction, with 80 percent of the civil works completed.  It is being financed by the Economic Development Cooperation Fund, Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Philippine government. It will replace the existing Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City.  The airport development will have an expanded capacity designed to meet Mindanao’s current air transport requirements for both passengers and cargo and the expected surge in demand once it becomes operational.
