Historic Butuan

a group of butuan dancersA national cultural treasure, estimated to be more than 1,600 years old, is housed in an old dilapidated structure near the east bank of the Libertad river in this historic city and trade center of Agusan del Norte province. The Balanghai shrine, a one-storey building being maintained by the National Museum, houses two of the three ancient boats discovered and excavated from 1976 to 1986. A curator and restorer at the Balanghai Shrine said radiocarbon tests administered by Japanese experts on one of these boats suggested that the wooden boat could have existed as early as 320 AD. Another boat was carbon dated to be more than 1000 years old.

Negros as best island to live on

A US magazine has listed Negros Oriental as one of the planet's 20 best islands to live on. In its July-August issue, Islands Magazine, one of the widest circulated and most trusted travel publications in the United States , included Negros Oriental with its capital Dumaguete as among the best islands in the whole world where expatriates may settle based on the following criteria: flip-flop wearability, strong expat communities, and affordable real estate.

Traces of the Spanish influence still loom in Intramuros. A tour of this landmark will provide the visitors a deeper understanding of Manila's rich heritage. Intramuros protects within its walls a number of national treasures like the Fort Santiago (once a prison for revolutionary Filipinos, now a peaceful park-cum-museum), San Agustin Church (the oldest structure in the country with its Baroque interiors and trompe l'oeil murals), Manila Cathedral (a magnificent architectural feat with its intricate stone carvings, stained glass mosaics, and rosette windows), Casa Manila (a former colonial house and now a museum of national relics), and San Juan de Letran school.
 

Lilo-an shows way in treating wastewater

Cebu City – Lilo-an, a second class municipality located north of this city, has shown the way to other coastal tourist towns on how to treat wastewater flowing to the sea. The town is the site of a decentralized wastewater treatment facility, a pilot project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has significantly reduced the coliform cell counts in the seawater near the beaches.

Survivor at Caramoan

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur province has been chosen once again as the location of an edition of the hit reality game show Survivor.  Survivor shot the two international versions of the show on the island in the past.  This time, Survivor Israel is filming another edition of Hisardot (Survivor) at the Gota Village Resort in Caramoan. The show is to be telecast in Israel until June 2010, according to a report by People's Tonight.

Biliran destinations, hotels and resorts

Almeria town in Biliran is intensifying the promotion of its little-known tourism destinations.  Municipal councilor Leonel Morillo, who chairs the council’s committee on tourism, said that several spots, such as the waterfalls in the villages of Sampao and Caucab, have remained largely unknown to local and foreign tourists.

Top summer destinations

A survey conducted by StratPOLLS in March 2011 listed Boracay as the top summer travel destination for residents living in Metro Manila.  Of the 250 respondents, 76 percent picked Boracay as the “top dreamland destination,” specifically among the rich and middle classes of Metro Manila.

Just beside Intramuros is Rizal Park, a 60-hectare conglomerate of gardens, historical markers, plazas, an artist's sanctuary, a 1913 bronze monument of Jose Rizal, a grand stadium, an observatory, an open-air concert hall, a light-and-sound theatre, restaurants, food kiosks and playgrounds, with dozens of fountains. Fronting the northwest side of the park is Manila Hotel, whose lobby is one of the most imposing in the world. Along the park's bayside, tourists can have an unobstructed view of the fabled Manila Bay sunset.
