DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM ELEVATES CULINARY TOURISM AS A PRIORITY UNDER SECRETARY CHRISTINA GARCIA FRASCO’S LEADERSHIP

Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco of the Department of Tourism (DOT) has declared a strategic emphasis on culinary tourism as a top priority, recognizing the integral role that gastronomy plays in enhancing the overall travel experience and promoting the rich culinary heritage of the Philippines.

Secretary Frasco revealed this new focus during a recent press conference, outlining the DOT’s commitment to nurturing and showcasing the diverse flavors, unique dishes, and culinary traditions that contribute to the country’s vibrant cultural tapestry.

“Culinary tourism is a powerful driver for attracting visitors, as it provides a unique lens through which travelers can explore and savor the authentic flavors of a destination. The Philippines boasts a rich culinary heritage that deserves to be celebrated and shared with the world,” stated Secretary Frasco.

Under her leadership, the DOT will collaborate with various stakeholders, including chefs, restaurateurs, local communities, and the private sector, to develop and promote culinary tourism initiatives that highlight the distinct flavors and culinary traditions of different regions across the archipelago.

To kickstart this culinary tourism initiative, the DOT plans to launch a series of events, festivals, and campaigns that showcase the diversity of Filipino cuisine, from traditional dishes to innovative culinary creations. These initiatives aim to attract both domestic and international tourists who have a keen interest in exploring the unique gastronomic offerings of the Philippines.

Secretary Frasco emphasized the potential economic impact of culinary tourism, stating, “By placing a spotlight on our culinary treasures, we not only draw in food enthusiasts but also stimulate economic growth by supporting local farmers, producers, and businesses associated with the food and beverage industry.”

In addition to promoting established culinary destinations, the DOT aims to uncover hidden gems and lesser-known culinary hotspots, encouraging travelers to explore off-the-beaten-path locations and discover the authentic flavors that make each region distinct.

The DOT’s focus on culinary tourism aligns with its broader mission to diversify and enrich the tourism landscape of the Philippines, showcasing the country’s unique cultural offerings beyond traditional attractions.
