1 Billion Global Tourists

International tourist arrivals grew 5 percent year-on-year in 2013, reaching a record 1.087 billion arrivals, according to the latest World Tourism Barometer of the United Nations’ World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Despite global economic challenges, international tourism results were well above expectations, with an additional 52 million international tourists travelling the world in 2013. For 2014, UNWTO forecasts 4 percent to 4.5 percent growth.

More Flights Between the Philippines and Japan

There will be more airline flights between the Philippines and Japan, after both countries signed a new air service agreement that allows their airlines to increase the number of passengers travelling to both sides.

Cebu Pacific carries 2.45 million passengers

Cebu Pacific flew 2.45 million domestic and international passengers in the first quarter of 2010, higher by almost 110,000 than Philippine Airlines’ system-wide figure of 2.34 million passengers.

World Ecotourism Conference in Cebu

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have unveiled a nine-year National Ecotourism Strategy and Action Plan (NES) at the 5th World Ecotourism Conference (WEC) in Cebu City.

Cebu City drew 403,326 international visitors in 2005, making the “queen city of the south” the top provincial destination of foreign travelers. Data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) also showed that Cebu City attracted 1,813 overseas Filipinos and 712,938 domestic travelers last year.

New Tourism Investments

About 28 new tourism projects worth PhP36.3 billion have been endorsed by the Department of Tourism for fiscal incentives from the government.  Once these projects are completed, some 15,567 jobs are expected to be generated.  The bulk of new investments, amounting to PhP 29 billion are in the Tourism Economic Zones. These include the Eagle Entertainment City, Bagong Nayong Pilipino Entertainment City, Embarcadero de Legaspi, Akean Resorts and Ilawod Estate Tourism Economic Zone.

Arrivals up 14 percent in April

International arrivals grew 14.1 percent to 238,941 in April 2006 from 209,381 a year ago.
